Desktop markdown, done right

Local and fast. Rich and raw editing side by side, a preview that never drifts, real privacy, and an outline mode that opens files of any size.

Rich text

Rich text that speaks markdown.

Write with a familiar toolbar, headings, bold, lists, tables, links, without leaving markdown. Every keystroke stays byte-for-byte the same file on disk, so nothing is lost in translation.

Format naturally

A toolbar when you want it, shortcuts when you don't.

Bold, italics, headings, quotes, code, links, and lists from the toolbar or the markdown you already know. Select text and a quick formatting bubble appears right where you are.

Never out of sync

The same document, both ways.

Rich and raw edit the exact same file. Flip between them and your cursor, scroll position, and undo history come along.

  • Switch modes without losing your place
  • Undo and redo span rich, raw, and preview
  • Links open on click only in preview, so editing stays clean
Tables, made easy

Build tables without touching the pipes.

Drag a column border to resize it, and add or remove rows and columns from the toolbar. MD Studio keeps the underlying markdown table aligned and valid, so the source stays clean.

  • Drag column borders to resize
  • Add or delete rows and columns in a click
  • Source markdown stays aligned and valid

Raw markdown

When you want the raw markdown.

Drop to a fast, syntax-highlighted source editor at any time. The same document, the same scroll position, the same undo history, just the plain text underneath.

Byte-fidelity saves

Saves that don't touch what you didn't.

Most editors quietly rewrite your file: line endings, trailing spaces, frontmatter quotes, list markers. MD Studio writes back exactly what you wrote, so diffs stay clean and nothing surprises you.

Preview

A preview that never drifts.

Headings, math, tables, task lists, callouts, and code render exactly as you write. Click a heading in any view and every pane lands on the same spot, so you never lose your place.

Renders everything

More than headings and bold.

Built on the same unified, remark, and rehype pipeline the rich editor uses, so the preview and the editor stay structurally identical.

Stay in place

Scroll sync that actually holds.

Heading slugs match GitHub's algorithm everywhere they appear, so a click in the outline, the editor, or the preview lands on the same heading in every other view, even across a split.

  • One click, every pane lands on the same heading
  • Split view keeps source and preview locked together
  • Position is kept when you switch modes or editors

Local & private

Yours, and only yours. Private by default.

MD Studio runs entirely on your machine. No accounts, no telemetry, no cloud. Opening a document never phones home.

No surprises

A document can't track you.

Markdown can hide tracking pixels and scripts. MD Studio gates remote images behind a prompt, sanitizes embedded HTML before preview, and refuses in-document navigations, so opening a file is safe.

Off by default

Every non-local feature ships off.

AI, plugins, and automatic updates are all opt-in, with a one-time explainer the first time you turn them on. As of version 1.3.0, MD Studio asks about automatic updates on first launch and lets you turn them off in Settings; earlier versions keep them on permanently. Even a version check stays anonymous.

  • No account, no telemetry, no analytics
  • AI, plugins, and updates are opt-in and clearly disclosed
  • Tight content-security policy and a sandboxed renderer

Outline mode & performance

Opens the unopenable.

A half-million-line document? MD Studio loads only the section you are editing and gives you a searchable outline to jump anywhere. Try the outline, search it, click a chapter.

Why it stays fast

Big files, small footprint.

Nothing about a large file blocks the window. Headings are scanned on a background thread, cached by content hash, and only the section you open is ever parsed and rendered.

Continued sections

Even a giant single section is reachable.

A single chapter longer than the cap splits into “continued” entries in the outline, so a multi-thousand-line table of contents is navigable in full, and saves still rewrite only what you touched.

  • Oversized sections split into continued parts
  • Saves preserve the untouched rest of the file, byte for byte
  • Returning to a file restores its cached outline instantly
